What Goes on Here
Create as Folk is run by me, career coach Laura Simms, and is fueled by you and other purpose-driven people like you.
By purpose-driven, we simply mean that we want our work to make a difference. Money is important, to be sure, but it’s not what springs us out of bed in the morning. We want to do something meaningful, be who we are, and wrap it up in cash (if we could carry it home in an Anthropologie bag, we would).
In the pursuit of a career that feels like home, we talk about meaning, money, purpose, legacy, identity, service, and self-expression. We also take action towards finding or creating that ideal career.
Create as Folk is the home base of the Career Homecoming movement, and I write, coach, and speak to spread the message.
What if You Could Get Paid for Being You?
You can. And I’ll help.
Bring your common sense along for this ride; I’m not saying anyone will pay you to sit in your pajamas and watch Parks and Rec on Hulu.
I’m talking about discovering and cashing in on your innate passions and personality. You bring value to the world just by virtue of being you. My job is threefold: help you become fluent in you, teach you how that can serve other people, and translate it all into dollars and cents.
Curious? I invite you to sign up to get started with my Get Paid for Being You video series. Within days of releasing it, I received thank you mail for this complimentary training.
Yes, I'd like to receive the free "get paid for being you" training series.
Create as Folk’s Philosophy
1. Making a living and making a life should go together.
2. Doing the right work feels like home.
3. At its best, work embodies the duality of contribution & self-expression.
And if I can be so bold as to amend Joseph Campbell’s famous quote,
4. The privilege of a lifetime is being (and getting paid for) who you are.
Why I Do This
In a past life, I was an actor who got paid to do fun stuff like flirt with Joe Mantegna, perform in a world-record breaking 70 hour improv show, and voice a redneck for a multi-million dollar video game.
My quest for more purpose-driven work made its logical conclusion at career coaching, where I could usher lost souls through career changes, and help folks thrive at the business-side of the craft or practice they love. Essentially, I became the guide I wish I’d had. You can learn more about my story here.
What Guides My Work
Gratitude. I believe that gratitude is the foundation of anything worth having or doing, and bring this spirit to my work.
Integrity. At the end of the day, the most valuable thing to me is my name. In action, that means I trust my intuition and do what I think is right, regardless of the call of the crowd.
Simplicity. People come to me for clarity and direction, and providing those essentials is baked into my business model. From the design of this website to the resources I offer, everything about Create as Folk is designed to be clear, elegant, and intentional.
Collaboration. I came up in a collaborative art form, and think working in ensemble is one of the most extraordinary things we humans are capable of. I’m a leader, but I work as your partner, not as your guru or aspirational it-girl.
Audacity. The magic happens when you leap. So as tame and tidy as things may seem around here, that ethos is matched by a willingness to risk and live unbridled.
Beauty. I want you to see results, but I also wish for you to have an enjoyable experience. I strive to bring beauty & artistry to even the mundane things like an email or blog planner so you can have a memorable and meaningful journey.
